Steam phone texts: adding a number versus Steam Guard codes

A Steam phone text is not a Steam Guard app code

Steam can send a confirmation text when you add a phone in Account Details. Setting up its mobile authenticator can also include a text to confirm a new phone. An SMS4U activation is relevant only if that screen lets you enter a new number and explicitly sends an SMS to it. Once the mobile authenticator is set up, normal sign-ins can use a QR scan, an app approval notification or a code generated inside the Steam app. A text-receiving number cannot generate those app codes. Account recovery or moving the authenticator to a new device may instead text the phone already bound to the account; a newly bought number cannot receive that older phone's message.

Steam says it may reject VoIP or other numbers that do not meet its requirements and that a phone must receive texts. Inventory on SMS4U therefore does not prove that Steam accepts a particular number or clears its security checks. The choices on your current Steam screen are decisive.

Compare stock only while confirming a new phone

When Steam is sending a confirmation text to a number you may now add, check its calling code, full number format and account region before looking at the offers below. Obtain a number, ask Steam to send the current code, and read the text within the SMS4U order window in Active orders. Steam notes that carrier delivery can be delayed and that too many code requests can temporarily stop further texts. If that happens, follow its waiting guidance rather than buying numbers repeatedly. If Steam rejects the number type, choose a compliant phone you can control for the long term.

Protect games and trading access beyond one SMS window

Steam issues a recovery code during mobile-authenticator setup and asks users to store it safely. It can be important if a phone is lost. Steam also warns that removing the authenticator reduces security and may limit trading and market access for a period. After a short activation expires, there is no promise that a later password reset, device transfer or authenticator-removal text can be received. For an account holding games or tradeable items, a durable personal phone and a saved recovery code are the safer setup. If the old phone is already lost, use Steam's official recovery and ownership process instead of expecting a new number to intercept its texts.
