A Proton signup may not ask for a phone at all

Proton distinguishes the human-verification step at account creation from recovery settings used later. At signup, its system can offer a CAPTCHA, a secondary email or an SMS. The options depend on the current check. If you can use a CAPTCHA or an email address you control, purchasing a number may be unnecessary. A text-receiving number is relevant only if the screen in front of you actually allows a new phone and offers to send it a message. Proton says it does not store the plain signup phone number for this check, although it keeps a cryptographic hash to detect repeated use; this does not mean any reused number will pass.

When CAPTCHA fails, Proton advises checking the signup page, connection and browser, then using another verification option only if one is presented. A VPN, proxy or extension can interfere with loading or registration. Buying SMS stock cannot create a phone option that is absent from Proton's interface. Follow the available official method or contact Proton support if no option works.

If Proton explicitly sends a signup text to a new number you enter, compare the country code and full format before looking at the offers below. The US and UK guides illustrate different calling codes, but Proton's current form decides which input it accepts. The picker shows the live pool, order window and final CNY debit. A repeated-number warning, delayed message and browser error are different problems. Read Proton's exact message before deciding whether a new request is sensible; changing numbers will not repair a broken signup page or override a platform restriction. Protect recovery access and encrypted data separately

Proton's SMS recovery is a separate password-reset option that a signed-in user adds and verifies in account settings. A later reset code goes to the recovery phone saved then, not to a newly purchased replacement. Proton also explains that email or SMS recovery can reset a password but does not on its own restore encrypted account data such as existing mail. Set up a data-recovery method and store the recovery phrase safely. For an account you will keep, use a personal recovery phone you can continue to receive; a short activation is unsuitable as the sole recovery route.
