Instagram SMS codes: check the linked phone before ordering

A new phone cannot collect a code addressed to an old one

If an Instagram sign-in, password reset or security screen shows masked digits of the phone already linked to your account, its code is going to that old phone. A different new number cannot receive it. Instagram's help center advises trying to recover the original email or phone when access is lost. If you can still enter the account, you can update its contact details to an email or mobile phone you control. If you cannot reach profile settings, simply buying a number will not let you change the old contact; follow the account recovery choices Instagram actually shows.

Password recovery has more than one starting point. Instagram's help lists username, email and phone for locating an account, with a reset link sent to the available contact route. Check the sign-in method and mailbox already associated with the account; if you used a connected Facebook login, inspect that route too. Paying for a short number does not establish ownership of an older account or transfer its posts, messages and business data. A durable recovery path is especially important for an account you plan to keep.

Compare stock only when Instagram asks for a new phone

If no code appears, first check whether the screen still points to the old linked phone, whether the calling code and digits match, and whether the SMS order remains active.
